The Cake
This past weekend we celebrated Gabriela Catalina’s fourth birthday- I can’t even believe how much time has gone by. I feel like it was only yesterday that Ben and Val pulled the last piece of furniture out of the box and Ben set it up. I remember standing in her room (aka the dining room) with Ben, looking into her crib and saying, “Now all we need is the baby.” And she came the very next day.
Her birthday party was super fun- we had a ridiculous amount of people in our apartment- like 40. The kids ran around like complete maniacs- as they should. We made a strawberry craft, played pin the strawberry on the hat, busted a piñata, and ate too much cake.
Speaking of cake…my mom always made and decorated my birthday cake every year, for as long as I could remember. I would tell her what kind of design I wanted and she would make it. It was never anything outrageous, just a cake in a pan (well, until I got to high school and I decided I wanted a three level chocolate cake…. Huh…. I forgot about that… maybe this is where this all started……) so I decided I wanted to do the same with my kids.
Gabriela Catalina took this cake design to a whole new level. Starting I think last year, she asked me to google pictures of her cake so she could pick. THIS year, we googled “Strawberry Shortcake” and of all the pictures online, she picked a three tiered cake. Ri-dic-u-lous. I did in fact tell her she could have whatever cake she wanted. And this was it. Top level chocolate (gluten free, wheat free, egg free, dairy free, peanut free for her friends with allergies), second layer strawberry (okay, really it was cherry, but don’t tell her- it was pink and that’s all that mattered, bottom layer half vanilla half strawberry). After four years of making cakes with fondant, I gotta say… I’m becoming quite impressed with these skills I never knew I had. I know its not perfect, but the little princess was beyond excited. And that’s good enough for me. Happy 4th Birthday Gabriela Catalina!
